George Ritzer: SCORAI Colloquium on Consumption and Social Change

May 6, 2015: George Ritzer, Distinguished Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland, author of The McDonaldization of Society, spoke on his theory of prosumption and “prosumer capitalism”. He argues that while prosumption implies democratization and empowerment, the new world of prosumption (including “smart” prosuming machines) has, to a large degree, been captured and exploited by capitalist interests thereby thwarting those “romantic” possibilities. leading to, among other things, increased unemployment, inequality, exploitation and alienation?
