The residential sector is one of the major sources of greenhouse gas emissions related to household consumption. In the global north, energy consumption in that sector has been steadily increasing during the past several decades. Partly, this is due to the rise in small single and double person households, and partly to increase in the size of dwellings. These trends largely offset the gains in energy efficiency of buildings and appliances and in transition to renewable electricity. What is the optimal and “fair” living space? How do changing lifestyles in the digital age change the housing needs? What kind of policies can drive the residential sector toward greater sustainability?
