Multiple solidarities for multiple economies: solidarity economy across geographical divides

Following Keith Hart’s definition of human economy (2010), solidarity economy can be broadly understood as a set of economic practices that puts the human needs at the center of the economy. Seyfang and Longhurst (2013) have pointed to the different roots of the solidarity economy practices in different regions of the world. If in places like Belgium they are seen as forms of alternative economy, supported by ecological ideologies, in Brazil the solidarity economy equals with state’s support of small scale economy, mainly in economically deprived sectors. This panel aims to examine the complex nature of a movement that encompasses radically different conditions, objectives and values.
